I started on the surface and had a good start with clearing good sites relatively early, collecting gold in what I was thinking a way to beat Dread at his own game = Monoculture.
I was set for monoculture at turn 28, without rushing too hard and sacrificing unit production/research.
Too my surprise Dread was able to finish Monoculture at turn 25! But I still went ahead and produced the remaining settler, as I had cleared a good area for that last settler.
I lost 2 good heroes on the way to clearing a Ziggurat and a Dungeon, the first (Ziggurat) was at turn 18, the Ziggurat had too much blight damage for my Elf Rogue to handle. I though I saved her by draining the movement of the King Serpent, but then the Glutton did a critical breath.
The reward was good though!
Since I lost out on the Monoculture, I started to produce knowledge in my main cities, trying to get to the Manticores before Dread, and clearing a few Sphinx Temples and a Wizard Tower helped me get there in turn 34. The first Manticore was then produced in turn 36 and I had 2 cities producing them, and another city producing Enhanced Armour and Greater Life Stealing Phalanx's, in case Dread brought his army the reverse way to my domain.
In building so many cities close by, I was able to take 3 cities of Dread in one turn, and then positioned my stacks he can attack 1vs3 or 3v4. Dread obviously took the latter option and this is the final battle:

Another thing that really paid off was to bring a builder with me, and I built at least 8 forts, some got razed but the majority still held up to the end.
But its good you at least have some scouting!
